Chromic gut sutures are resorbable sutures made from purified connective tissue most commonly derived from sheep or cow intestines. Mostly collagen, these sutures provide ideal strength for post-surgical use, and because they are resorbable they are broken down by the patient's body during the healing process. Because of their composition, they are absorbed slowly, making them ideal for long-term use. Like all sutures, they should be kept in their sterile package until the time they are needed.
