Premier Dental Products Company recently released BioCoat, a bioactive resin pit and fissure sealant with patented SmartCap Technology.
The heavily filled sealant combines optimal physical properties with extended fluoride release and remineralization ions, according to a press release. It offers optimal compressive and shear bond strengths, low polymerization shrinkage to protect against marginal gaps and is thixotropic.
BioCoat is said to flow freely into tight pits and fissures for excellent adaptation and adhesion to enamel. The esthetic material is easily light cured and continuously releases fluoride.
The bioactive material’s SmartCap Technology, which was developed in partnership with Creighton University, incorporates patented semi-permeable resin microcapsules. The rechargeable microcapsules are filled with ionic solutions of fluoride, calcium and phosphate, which diffuse in and out of the sealant. The ions supersaturate the oral environment around the enamel, which provides defense against demineralization during acid attacks.
The extended release of remineralization ions provides long-term protection while strengthening enamel and sealing margins against microleakage. There is no degradation of the restoration resulting from the fluoride release.
