Twist2it Disposable Prophy Angle

The Twist2it is a unique disposable prophy angle (DPA). Unlike other DPAs that rotate a full 360 degrees, the Twist2it DPA oscillates in a reciprocating arc of 90 degrees (1/4 turn). This reciprocating motion requires the Twist2it DPA to be in constant contact with the tooth surface, in contrast to the on-and-off "dabbing" technique required with rotary DPA's. The manufacturer purports that debris spatter commonly associated with rotary DPAs is virtually eliminated. Furthermore, the Twist2It is advertised as producing less heat while causing less gingival irritation.

Clinical evaluators greatly appreciated the function of the Twist2it, reporting that it virtually eliminated spatter and produced less gingival irritation. Patients also appreciated the reduced gingival irritation, with only minimal reports of sensitivity during treatment. The Twist2it functioned flawlessly during evaluation and was quieter than rotary DPAs.

The Twist2it does require a different clinical application technique, because it is designed for constant contact with the tooth for maximum effectiveness. This might result in a learning curve for the clinician. Evaluators reported that it is less efficient than a rotary DPA in removing stains. It has a slightly larger head than rotary DPAs, which might make access more difficult. The Twist2it is also more expensive than a rotary DPA.

The action of the TWIST will effectively clean tooth surfaces with no frictional heat and splatter. This is especially important in the cleaning of the prepared labial surface of teeth prior to the bonding of laminate veneers. With the gentle action of the TWIST there is no fear of gingival bleeding contaminating the bonding materials during the laminating process. Clean tooth surface is also important with in-office bleaching of teeth. Twist is Cleaner: Elimination of messy prophy splatter. 90° action creates no centrifugal force, no spinning revolutions. Prevents splatter from blood, saliva, prophy paste, and all debris. Twist is Faster: The Twist generates no frictional heat as it oscillates. Operator can now apply constant pressure without stopping against tooth structure.
