MultiCore Composite Resin Core Material

MultiCore® is a dual-curing, filled, fluoride-containing composite resin designed for core build-up restorations of vital and non-vital teeth and luting of fiber posts. MultiCore® is available in two viscosities (heavy and flowable) and three shades (light, medium, and blue). In clinical situations where a matrix can be utilized, the flowable consistency of MultiCore® Flow may be indicated. MultiCore® Flow is delivered from a cartridge with auto-mix and intra-oral mixing tips. Additionally, the low viscosity allows for cementation of endodontic posts. For larger core buildups, clinicians may prefer the heavier body and formability of MultiCore® HB. MultiCore® HB is dispensed from syringes (base and catalyst), mixed, and applied with an instrument.

Evaluators felt MultiCore had an adequate working time and thought the automix delivery system simplified the placement of the flowable version. They were able to place the material in bulk and prepare it immediately after light curing. The dual curing capability assured adequate polymerization and laboratory testing of MultiCore showed the material to have a comparatively high strength and excellent radiopacity. MultiCore is available in three shades and two viscosities and the kit includes a unit-dose adhesive agent with dual-cure activators. Laminated instruction cards are provided with the kit, as is a Material Safety Data Sheet. Lot numbers, expiration dates, and storage conditions are provided on the box, syringes, and cartridges. The flowable version is competitively priced.

Overall, the system is more expensive than amalgam. The heavy body paste/paste version may be difficult to mix. The various shades and viscosities must be purchased separately and the system requires clinical users to store and maintain a dispensing gun over and above those they already have. The product must be refrigerated, which complicates storage.
