MouthWatch Announces 2019 “Teledentistry Innovation Awards” During Greater New York Dental Meeting

MouthWatch honored its 2019 “Teledentistry Innovation Awards” winners at an invitation-only event held during the Greater New York Dental Meeting.

This is the second year for the award, which highlights the ways teledentistry is being implemented across the dental industry, according to a press release. Four teledentistry pioneers who are realizing the full potential for connected dental care technology received a Tellie Award.

2019 Tellie Awards Winners (L-R) Angie Stone, RDH, Paul Glassman, DDS, Paul Labbe, DDS, Brant Herman, CEO MouthWatch, LLC (Miquel McRae, RDH was not able to attend and accepted her award via video conference).

This year’s winners are:

Teledentistry Pioneer:

Dr. Paul Glassman is the first award-winner in this category. He is the founder of the Virtual Dental Home Program, where he and his team at the University of the Pacific developed a more efficient way to connect patients to dental care through the combination of technology and innovation. This care-delivery model, combined with his efforts in education to support legislative changes that advance teledentistry and improve access to care, have helped create a landscape where more programs and providers are interested in teledentistry.

Dental Innovator:

Dr. Paul Labbe is a Texas-based pediatric dentist with five offices and uses teledentistry to provide care to underserved children in his community. Teledentistry enables him and his team to conduct dental screenings at local schools and provide parents and guardians with diagnosis and treatment plans with the option to bring their children to one of his offices for restorative treatment.

Hygiene Innovator:

Angie Stone, of the Hylife Oral Health Alliance, and her team provide onsite hygiene services to elderly patients who live in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and private homes. They use teledentistry to document every patient visit with intraoral photos and videos. They’re also able to communicate with family members and participating dentists.

Oral Health Program Innovator:

Miquel McRae, RDH, founded ToothBUDDS, a non-profit that employs a team of dental hygienists to provide oral care to underserved children in the area, many of which have some form or oral disease. They provide education, screenings, cleanings and fluoride treatments in local school settings. Through teledentistry, they’re able to connect children who have urgent dental needs to a local dentist.

Nominations for next year’s Tellie Awards are being accepted here. Self-nominations are welcome.
