At this time of year most of us take time to reflect on the past year and celebrate the holiday season with family, friends and colleagues. The past week in California has prepared me for my annual trip back home in Maryland with freezing temperatures and SNOW - an uncommon occurrence here in the San Francisco Bay area. Without a doubt, it's put me in the holiday mood and while piling on the blankets I can't help but be grateful for my family, friends and colleagues who have helped me through a personally difficult year...Many of you followed our loss of 2 young cats this year on www.In2Hygiene.com (you can still view videos of Madison as well as a new one of Kai!). I am happy to say KaiBlu, our latest addition is healthy and quite a character.
I am also grateful for the opportunities my profession has afforded me and with this newsletter I announce that in 2009 I will move on to other opportunities and step down as the Editor of Dental Hygiene for www.Dentalcompare.com. I have so enjoyed the enthusiastic, talented and creative minds who have made Dentalcompare what it is today! I have learned more than I ever imagined about electronic media and the importance it has in our professional growth and success.
Most of all, I am so appreciative of YOU, our subscribers, as well as my author colleagues who have contributed to the dental hygiene body of knowledge now archived on the site. Best of luck for the New Year! I look forward to a continued relationship with Dentalcompare as a speaker and writer - I know I would not be as successful without them!

At this time of year, many of us have some 'extra' time to re-energize, update our 'files' and connect with family & friends. For those of you who have not yet done so, I invite you to visit link - this site provides an excellent avenue to stay connected with colleagues in dental hygiene near & far.
I never imaged how much I would enjoy a site like this! It has been so much fun building my page and including professional and personal information. I've also enjoyed connecting with new friends while staying in touch with so many across the country. At this site local groups can post their upcoming CE events and individuals can post videos, photos and more. I can't think of a better time to sign up and get your page started.
Another feature I have enjoyed is the ability to email my 'friends' all at once. I am able to notify them of new photo or video postings and stay in touch with one easy step. I have also appreciated the listings of CE - more than ever many of us are looking for continuing education close to home. Members are also able to create their own special groups where they can make plans for upcoming events and discuss topics of interest.
The holidays have always meant a celebration of relationships...we invite you to take advantage of this fun way to evolve your professional and personal connections...year round! Enjoy - I look forward to seeing you online!

No doubt many of you are finally able to breathe. It seems as though the United States has been holding its collective breath awaiting the outcome of our history making elections. Never in the history of our country have so many become a part of the process, engaged in making a change and taken advantage of their rights to direct the future of our country.
I now worry about those of us who 'lived' for the debates, awaited the latest text updates on our cell phones and kept up on the most recent initiative commercials touting FOR or AGAINST. I have colleagues that I had to check the schedule to make sure I was not phoning during a Presidential debate...these same individuals hosted election parties and were glued to picture-in-picture coverage between 3 or 4 broadcasting channels. And yet on Wednesday...the television ads were gone...the proposition volunteers deserted their corner posts...and the continuous speculation ceased...
And yet we DO have the opportunity for this type of involvement to affect change within our own profession. I can only image where we would be as a profession if all dental hygienists became involved in the 'process' through our professional organization. Perhaps we'd be more like nursing in terms of access to care and scope of practice. Perhaps we'd be more unified to create opportunities for professional growth and camaraderie. Perhaps we'd feel more secure in our chosen profession (especially in these trying economic times)...
So...for those of us suffering from election withdrawal, consider the opportunities to affect change within our profession! These are truly exciting times...what will you do to assure history in the making?

Many of us are staying home instead of traveling for our continuing education. Remember, many states restrict the number of CE hours that can be obtained through home study type courses.
To that end, we are now seeing an increase in online CE as well as ‘virtual’ trade shows! RDH Magazine has held 3 of these events with a 4th planned for March, 2009. Not unlike a ‘live’ trade show, the virtual show featured exhibitors, door prizes and continuing education webinars. The last event was held in October and is located online at link.
I have had the opportunity to participate in all 3 of these events, with this last event including my facilitation of a webinar (my 1st!). The CE credits are FREE and still available through November. Log onto the link above, register and then visit the auditorium to access these quick seminars (50 minutes each or less). There are 4 programs available with topics ranging from accelerated periodontal instrumentation (handout located at the Philips/sonicare booth), to career options in dental hygiene to tooth whitening. The CE credit slip will print at the conclusion of the event & after you’ve completed the CE quiz.
I can’t imagine these will replace our live opportunities, however, we will see these increase as our time becomes more limited and demand increases for quick access to quality CE. Registering for the event still online will automatically place you on an invite list for the March event.
When attending that event, be sure to visit the networking lounge and say “Hello!” Our virtual world is expanding…and savvy clinicians are jumping on the band ‘width’ – see you online!

Below is an article featured in the September ADEA Bulletin. As the Director if It's Academic, we are thrilled with the response to this unique experience for educators & professional speakers. 2009 enrollment is now open! Log onto link for full workshop information.
Philips Sonicare Supports Academic Renewal with Faculty and Student Scholarships
For many faculty and students, summer is a time to renew and, as Dr. Stephen Covey says, "sharpen the saw" for the upcoming academic year. ADEA Corporate Member Philips Oral Healthcare, Inc., offered two full scholarships to the "It's Academic…Let's Present It!" workshop so that a dental hygiene faculty member and a student could "sharpen the saw."
"It's Academic … Let's Present It!" is specifically for dental educators to learn ways to enhance educational presentations. It took place July 18-20, 2008, in Redwood City, California.
Noel Paschke, R.D.H., M.S., Senior Manager of North America Professional Education and Academic Relations for Philips Sonicare, wanted to provide content-rich training for a faculty member and a student who may be considering a future academic career to learn teaching techniques and tools that engage adult learners. Paschke also noted that continuing education is moving away from lecture-style instruction toward experiential learning.
The student scholarship winner, Ms. Kim Wilson from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, enthusiastically endorsed her participation. "It was a great experience for me! I have been to many dental conferences throughout my career, but nothing compares to 'It's Academic.' The faculty was outstanding. I felt like I was sitting in a room full of who's who in dental hygiene. The content was amazing, and I actually had a lot of fun while learning great presentation techniques. Thanks to Sonicare for the incredible scholarship opportunity."
Prof. Rachel Henry, Clinical Instructor and Academic Advisor from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, said, "I truly enjoyed the 'It's Academic' workshop. The faculty provided so many resources, tips, and information, and I have already started to incorporate these into the classroom and the clinic. The hands-on sessions were very practical. I met several wonderful educators and shared great ideas about how to improve dental hygiene education. Everyone was there to become better educators, whether we were presenters or professors, and I think we did just that."
In 2009, Philips will again offer two full scholarships (including travel and lodging) to "It's Academic…Let's Present It." The application process will start in April 2009, when dental hygiene program directors will receive an email for distribution to faculty and students.
To learn more about "It's Academic…Let's Present It," visit www.EducationalDesigns.com or contact Ms. Noel Paschke at noel.paschke@philips.com. The next session is set for July 10 - 12, 2009 at the Sofitel Hotel, in Redwood City, CA.

The American Dental Hygienists' Association has revamped National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM). This years celebration theme is "A Healthy Smile Lasts a Lifetime" and features activities throughout the month of October.
First full week: Hygienists’ Appreciation Day—let your employer, patients, friends and family celebrate you! Choose a day of the week that works for all of you and celebrate what it means to be a hygienist and all of the wonderful work that you do.
Weeks two and three: Community Service—we know that hygienists are volunteer oriented, but donate one more day of your time to a community service event and make your community a better place. Maybe you can team up with a co-worker, a friend, or a local dental hygiene program; remember to invite your legislator to remind them of your dedication.
Week four: Take a Potential Member to Lunch—as an ADHA member, take a friend, or a co-worker who’s not out to lunch. ADHA is the community for all dental hygienists. Show them the value, but remember, it’s not a sales pitch—just a friendly gesture on behalf of yourself and the profession.
In previous years ADHA has focused on specific age groups for NDHM. This year we’ve opened it up, and decided to focus on the entire family from infant to geriatric oral health care.
ADHA invites you to visit link for additional information, resources and opportunities. What a great way to celebrate our profession and create an awareness for our role in prevention and a life time of healthy smiles!

Last weekend marked the first workshop of it's kind. "It's Academic...Let's Present It!" was lead by a stellar faculty and key industry partners, Discus Dental, Philips/Sonicare, PennWell & Dentalcompare. As reported in a Journal of the American Dental Association June 2008 Commentary/Editorial titled "Quality Improvement and Continuing Education in Dental Practice" (June, 2008), continuing education for medical professionals is moving away from lecture style CME and requiring, instead, an experiential-based curricula.
Lecture style CE may result in an increase in knowledge on the part of the participant, while an experiential seminar will lead to application of newly acquired knowledge. The challenge is to move into this type of seminar and with new technology and understanding the science of learning, tools are now available to facilitators that will result in application-based learning.
The attendees at the workshop varied from educators in dental hygiene, to international speakers, to those investigating their opportunities in either venue. The opportunity to delve into andragogy (adult learning) and understand that the learner requires constant engagement will undoubtedly lead to an important paradigm shift in dental continuing education.
The new criteria outlined in medicine for CME will have its impact in dentistry. As an attendee of CE your opportunity is to seek those facilitators who've adopted these learning principles. Ultimately the goal is to see facilitators in education embrace this new approach...while the attendees will reap the rewards and improve the oral health of their patients!
As the Director of this event, I extend my personal thanks to our 'funshop' attendees & partners. It's clear that they embrace reshaping the future of education and they are committed to professional success!

It's amazing to me that at one time we looked at summer as the season for vacation, relaxation and not much going on in our profession. Summer has now become a time for collegial & professional growth opportunities through the annual RDH Magazine's RDH Under One Roof Conference!
This conference features so many speakers & events, it's difficult to do it all. In addition, the 3-day conference features exhibits and ample opportunity to connect with colleagues from all over the country at a number of receptions and social events.
RDH Under One Roof will be kicking off with a tour of ADHA Headquarters on Wednesday, July 30th and plenty of CE sessions starting on Thursday. The event runs from July 31 - August 2, 2008 at the Chicago Hilton, in Chicago, IL. Event details & registration information can be viewed at: link
It's not too late to come on into Chicago and take this fun opportunity to earn CE credit, socialize and re-energize! Hope to see you there!

The past month have been exciting for dental hygiene: Maine, as the 2nd state with independent dental hygiene practice & California with the 1st state to achieve self regulation! In addition, IN2Hygiene.com link launched and is growing daily. This new community provide a venue for networking and keeping up to date on the latest happening in the profession. Check out this fun, informative opportunity to collaborate with your colleagues!
This week also marks a successful ADHA Annual Session in Albuquerque, NM with record attendance! This session includes the Center for Lifelong Learning as well as the business side of the only national organization representing the interests of our profession. Celebrations will be a key theme as we continue through a very active & productive year.

As of April, Maine is now the 2nd state to allow unsupervised practice of dental hygienists. Colorado was the first state in 1979! Although 18 states offer some form of relaxed supervision opportunities for dental hygienists, it seems remarkable that it's been so many years for another state to offer independent dental hygiene practice. Having been involved in debates on this issue for many years, clearly there is not an abundance of support for unsupervised practice.
And yet...both the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) & the American Dental Association (ADA) have moved forward with proposals for new levels of health care providers. In the case of the ADHA, they have proposed the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner (ADHP), a dental hygienist with additional education who would provide additional services without supervision (see link for more information). The ADHP model was well received in Minnesota recently and although it did not pass as proposed, the state did adopt a new level provider called the Oral Health Practitioner (see NEWS item at: link)
The ADA has proposed 2 different providers (as reported in the ADA News, Volume 39, No. 8, April 21, 2008): the Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC), a new allied dental person with community health worker skills who comes from the community they serve, and would work under the supervision of dentists, dental hygienists and community health workers. The CDHC would provide preventive related services. The 2nd is the Oral Preventive Assistant (OPA), who would work in private practice settings and provide 'individual preventive services' including scaling for periodontal Type I (gingivitis), fluoride & sealant application, coronal polishing and more (see link for complete article).
It's clear that organized dentistry & dental hygiene have recognized the need for access to quality care...collaboration seems to be in order. What can we do to maximize the resources we currently have? Do Maine, Colorado and the 18 other states with relaxed levels of supervision have the right idea?
Prevention and access seem to be at the core. It will be interesting to watch how this evolves and clearly the time is right for change...

Singer Loren Depping has released a song about...a dental hygienist! He states his 'love' for this 'college' educated professional! When I went to iTunes to download the song, it was the most downloaded song from his album Go Train. Word of this song has torn through the dental hygiene community - it's not only endearing, we must appreciate his acknowledgement of our professional status.
He mentions flossing instruction and more...now he does use the HYGENIUS pronunciation, but who cares! The refrain indicates '6 months is too long to stay away'...don't we wish every patient was this inspired! While I couldn't find the lyrics in writing, you can download the song from numerous sites - ENJOY!
This week Dentalcompare will be exhibiting at both the California Dental Hygienists' Association and the California Dental Association meetings in Anaheim, CA (one of my all time favorite conventions/meetings with that SoCal great weather!). Be sure to stop by our booths and watch for our live blogs from the show.

Most who know me, know that I am a devout, if not crazy, fan of reality TV. This week MTV will air the 20th season of "The Real World", a show that follows 7 'youthful' strangers, living together and taped 24 hours a day. Their tag line is 'watch what happens when people stop being polite...and start to get real". It's hard to believe that this genre has not only succeeded, but accelerated!
Hygiene Idol? Scaling with the Assistants? Survivor?! The Amazing Race!
Televised contests have marched their way to the top of the ratings charts. From American Idol to Dancing with the Stars, Americans have become more involved in voting for their favorite TV contestants than voting for president. As a ‘consequence’, these contestants are afforded an opportunity that accelerates their previous paths to fame and fortune.
Would a show focused on a dental talent be of interest? Scaling with the Assistants may not grab the average viewer’s attention but surely would find an audience within the dental profession. Scaling with the Assistants could take assistants and teach them how to scale teeth in a short period of time. Then, with cameras rolling we, the viewers, could observe each assistant as he or she tackled cases of escalating difficultly. Viewers would then text, phone, or e-mail in their votes…for the best scaling assistant! Ridiculous, right?!
And yet, perhaps this scenario is all too real and possibly on the verge of becoming everyday practice. The American Dental Association’s proposed Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC), which includes many dental hygiene duties, and state dental associations’ looking into legislative changes to expand the scope of practice for the dental assistant are evidence that this concept may not be far off. Unfortunately, there will be no voting by vested consumers/viewers. Instead, these critical decisions will be made by legislators, via organized dentistry, who will become the ultimate judges in oral health services.
One of my all-time favorite reality TV shows is Survivor. This season features Fans vs. Favorites...those with NO experience (except a love for the show) pitted against those who have played before. I can think of many parallel examples in dentistry and the theme 'outwit, outplay and outlast' seems at times most appropriate!
By far my favorite show is the Amazing Race. Players in this show race across the globe with limited resources, facing culturally based physical and emotional challenges along the way. The cultures’ beauty and heart-pounding excitement are reward enough for many of the players. The first 2-member team to cross the finish line wins $1 million, with prizes given at every leg of the race for those who arrive first.
I have viewed my career in dental hygiene much like the Amazing Race. At times I was unclear of my next step, presented with unique career opportunities and told it was not possible and, early in my career, took the chance to express my dental 'hygieneism' through dental pharmaceutical sales without any sales experience or education. Today I travel the country, meet thousands of colleagues a year, and am constantly in awe of how huge the heart of hygiene truly is. We are such a diverse group of professionals and, yet, we all maintain similar core values.
My career adventures have grown organically throughout the years and regardless of the prize at the end, it’s the journey that has been most rewarding. Experientially having the chance to live in the moment of our profession provides an abundance I am grateful for. I have been blessed with a team of colleagues who are at the highest level of integrity, selflessness, professionalism, creativity, and talent. They are the mentors and heroes of hygiene, they have created our professional direction and without fail they are always on the lookout for the next opportunity.
Consider your dental hygiene journey, the reality and the future of it. Regardless of your reality, don’t forget to enjoy the process of our amazing profession and your role in creating our next reality.

By now most of us have adjusted to the recent time change & are enjoying the extra hour of sunshine at the end of the day, as well as looking forward to spring. As the Chair of Professional Development and long-time member of the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA), I can't think of a better way to celebrate our profession then attending the annual CDHA Spring Scientific Session on May 2, 2008 at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Anaheim, CA. This event is held in conjunction with one of the best dental conventions in the country, the California Dental Association (CDA) Scientific Session, and is located just outside Disneyland.
Great weather, unparalleled programs, exhibits galore and the opportunity to combine lifelong learning with a bit of FUN, are all a part of the CDHA/CDA convention experience. CDHA's program this year features internationally renowned speaker Betsy Reynolds, RDH, MS, whose topic on oral piercing is not only timely but lively as well! Additionally, CDHA features their annual Student Table Clinic Competition - these talented future colleagues often continue on to the national competition hosted by the ADHA. The day includes a jam packed exhibit hall and plenty of opportunity to catch up with colleagues, friends & corporate representatives.
CDHA provides classroom style seating, morning refreshments, and lunch, along with door prizes and 6 hours of continuing education credit. The business side of our profession can prove the most challenging and this software minimizes that challenge by providing a quick & easy method to quantify practice procedures, such as root planing per month and by clinician. Additionally, the software provides comparative data for national trends. Baseline & benchmarking your practice has been simplfied to maximize your practice success! WOW! The Chicago MidWinter is proving to be a fantastic show with respect to new technologies that will advance our practice. Case in point...the new Midwest Caries ID detection handpiece. This light weight, cordless device will identify both occlusal & interproximal caries using LED technology.
I had the opportunity to see this in 'action' & it will truly take chairside caries detection to a entirely new level. This device replaces explorer detection techniques, which is a cornerstone for a minimally invasive approach. A green light indicates a caries free surface, while a red light indicates areas of decay.
For those in Chicago, you will find the Caries ID at the Dentsply booth.

Finally enjoying warm weather in California, I packed up and flew to chilly, snowy Chicago yesterday...I've only been here at the convention for a few short hours & already have "Hot" off the press news for you & your patients.
1st...for those of you who have been wondering where the locally applied antimicrobial, Atridox (10% doxycycline) has been, they are BACK. Watch for the product to be relaunched under a new company Tolmar, Inc. (888-920-3322). They are in the process of hiring a professional sales team and will be providing education regarding this LAA. One of the innovations to the product include a canula with probe markings. For those here in Chicago, the Tolmar booth is located at 2854.
2nd, I had the opportunity to sit with the periodontist from PreViser. This system is a MUST for every practice...the opportunity to 'quantify' risk for periodontal disease, caries and oral cancer has never been easier or more important. Additionally, practices can 'test drive' the PreViser system for 10 assessments and/or 30 days when utilizing their dental hygiene consultants. Visit www.previser.com - for those here in Chicago, the booth is located at 2838. Be sure to check out their 'game wheel' after you've seen their presentation. I am a happy owner of a few free lattes!!! YAY!
And finally, be sure to stop by and see us here at the meeting (sign up for the newsletter for your own free lattes!) - truly, this event has already proven a 'hot' opportunity for our profession!

The professional meeting season is officially in full swing. I have always found it interesting, if not down right 'chilly', that the 1st two major (high attendance) dental conventions of the year are held in Boston and then Chicago. It seems as though weather will never be a factor in continuing our path of life long learning!
Here at DentalCompare we are well aware of your passion for professional growth and continued education. As a result we are always looking for new ways to expand our site to meet your ever evolving needs. This month marked the launch of our Learning Centers. I invite you to visit the Hygiene Learning Center where you will find easy access to hygiene related features, new product/technology information as well as product/technique videos. Visit often as plans are underway to include interviews with key hygiene opinion leaders and business resources to advance your professional goals.
If you plan to 'bundle' up for the CMW, please stop by and see us! And as always, I welcome your comments, ideas and contributions!

2008 is off and running and here in Northern California, we were treated to the amazing Mavericks Surf Competition on January 12, 2008. This competition is unique in that invitees only have a short period of time to make it to the coast and compete in 25 - 30 foot waves off of Half Moon Bay. The daring of these surfers and commitment to their sport is awe-inspiring and was only eclipsed by the decision by the 6 finalists to split the prize purse, no matter the outcome.
While few of us will ever experience the swell of killer waves, we can all appreciate the spirit of honoring talent and heart felt camaraderie in our professional and personal lives. Here at Dentalcompare we pride ourselves in making it easy for you to ‘surf’ through the plethora of technologies and products that optimize our clinical practice. Check out the Quick Pick feature in our newsletter to view instant category comparison, or ‘surf’ through our events calendar to find a continuing education event to ignite your professional passion.
Plans are well under way to enhance your professional lives and we welcome your participation. Please contact me (kmbernie@dentalcompare.com) with your interest in contributing a feature article, or posting an upcoming event. Our goal is to bring out the ‘maverick’ in you!
All the best for a great 2008!

As National Dental Hygiene Month winds down ( a national recognition month via the ADHA), and fall is firmly in the air, there are a plethora of continuing education cpportunities I am looking forward to in November.
The first weekend in November features 2 large dental hygiene state events hosted by the Maryland Dental Hygiensits' Association (MDHA) in Columbia, MD and the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA) in Redwood City, CA. The MDHA event will feature nationally renowned speakers and exhibits. Registration information can be accessed at www.maryland-dha.org. For many years I had the opportunity to facilitate this event for MDHA...I will miss my east coast colleagues this year and visit to my home...but maybe not the cooler weather!
Instead, this year, I will be working with the CDHA on the other coast as the Chair of Professional Relations. CDHA's 6th Annual CE Extravaganza is just that...something for everyone! Top notch speakers, exhibit reception and a special track for the RDHAP will all be featured. Registration information is available at: www.cdha.org - please stop by & introduce yourself!
Another outstanding and little known opportunity for WOW live CE will be featured at the ACE Convention being held in sunny Scottsdale, AZ from November 7 - 10, 2007. This event features nationally recognized speakers in aesthetics as well as CE from dental hygiene thought leaders. In addition, ACE offers a certication program especially for the dental hygienist and once again will offer STAR SEARCH - a venue for budding dental hygiene speakers to present. I will be facilitating a session on Accelerated Instrumentation as well as an early morning yoga session. More information is available at: http://acesthetics.com/
Finally, my year will end in the Carolinas...Charlotte to be exact. I have a fondness for the Carolinas as I spent many a vacation there growing up and attending the University of South Carolina. My Dad recently retired to Wilmington, NC so it seems as though my connection with the south will continue - YAY! A full day CE event , Nov. 16, 2007,is being hosted by the Charlotte Metrolina Study Club, registration information is available at: www.EducationalDesigns.com in the Schedule link.
As the busy year winds down...I hope to see you at one of the above events. Happy fall CE!

October 19 & 20, 2007 marked the first virtual trade show for dental hygienists hosted by RDH Magazine. While I had some idea how this might work, I could not imagine the details or how this experience would related to a LIVE show. Over 1,500 professoinals pre-registered and were sent log on instructions. From there attendees selected individual/personal icons or up loaded photos and proceeded on the the trade show 'floor'.
Philips/sonicare, Colgate, Dentsply, MIS Implants, Acqua Med Tech, Biotene/Laclede, DenTek, Dux Dental, GC America, GSK, Hu-Friedy, Premier, Zenith and the ADHA were the featured sponsors/exhibitors. Participants clicked on various booths to view information, videos and 'chat' live with representatives. Their participation demonstrated support for our profession and it was a great opportunity to learn the latest from the comfort of home. Door prizes, online continuing education and a 'Lounge' for networking completed a unique and very interesting 'trade show' experience.
I especially enjoyed the virtual lounge where you could see who was in the 'room' and included an open chat box to view all comments in live/real time. This virtual event was a great compliment to the ever popular RDH Under One Roof venue (July 31 - Aug. 2, 2008 - Chicago, IL - http://uor08.events.pennnet.com/fl//index.cfm) and gave dental hygienists across the country and Canada to connect, network, compare product information and just catch up! Congrats to the RDH/Pennwell folks as well as the companies who supported this event!
I expect more of these opportunities in the future...so get acquainted with your computer and get ready for more innovative learning experiences!

As a dental hygienist here in California since 1989, I have had the opportunity to be involved in the progression of the profession through legislative activity...most recently the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA) has been working on self-regulation. Last year their bill made it to the Governor's desk where it was vetoed in the last hour. If signed, this legistation would have established the first dental hygiene 'board' with a a major consumer presence.
Ever vigilant, the CDHA renewed it's efforts this year for an independent Committee of Dental Hygiene...this year proved a different year, when the California Dental Association removed their opposition and the bill passed with a vast majority out of both houses. However...once again the bill was vetoed. What follows is a statement by the bill's author. Even when working together, legistative change can prove challenging...
Are you doing all you can to support access and secure the dental hygiene scope of practice? After reviewing what follows, I encourage those who've yet to join ADHA to do so...that little amount of money, collectively, makes THE difference! Go to www.adha.org for membership information and visit www.cdha.org for the latest news on this landmark legislation and its impact on California dental professionals.
Subject: Perata Questions Governor's Veto of Pro-Consumer Legislation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
October 16, 2007
Perata Seeks Answers to Governor's Elimination of State Dental Board
(SACRAMENTO) - Senate President pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland) called on the Governor today to explain how his administration will handle the elimination of the California Dental Board, which will sunset July 1, 2008, as a result of his veto of SB 534.
The board is now set to become a bureau under the state Department of Consumer Affairs. In a letter to the Governor, Perata asked whether the administration plans to sponsor new legislation to extend the sunset date, or if not, how it plans to maintain the transparency and accountability of the board as a bureau.
"The Governor's veto of SB 534 is concerning," said Senator Perata. "The legislation was the product of years of negotiation and compromise, and it addressed all the issues raised by the administration."
The veto message did not mention the sunset issue and stated only: "This measure will lead to increased licensure fees for dental hygienists and dental assistants without providing additional consumer protections."
The claim is wrong, Perata said. "There is no evidence whatsoever to support an assumption that this bill would result in increased fees. I am concerned that a potential fee increase was a ruse and that the truth may be a trend of deregulation and an intentional move to eliminate all consumer boards by this administration."
"The Governor has vetoed legislation to continue the oversight of for-profit vocational schools, to subject the regulation of chiropractors to basic oversight and accountability, and now to continue the oversight of dentists by the Dental Board," Perata said. "These vetoes are anti-consumer plain and simple."

September always reminds me of heading back to school...although I have not participated in that activity for...well... many years! Reflecting back on August, it was one busy month. I enjoyed participating in 3 dental hygiene events staring with RDH Under One Roof in Washington, DC. A record attendance, outstanding courses, the opportunity to network & socialize with colleagues and vendors provided all participants unique and memorable experiences.
As a panelist with Michelle Hurlbutt, RDH, BS and Betsy Reynolds, RDH, MS I was fortunate to experience the new FlexCare and we discussed how this next generation sonicare put the 'power' back in power toothbrush technology. Sold out yoga sessions I lead demonstrated the desire by the hygiene community to connect their professional and personal lives; the popular receptions showed how much we enjoy being together, even after long days of classes; but most of all UOR represented a unity of our profession and those who support us.
Mid-August featured the ever popular Arizona State Dental Hygienists' Association Scientific Conference and while it's hot in Arizona in August, the speakers and topics were even hotter! The month ended with the 2nd CareerFlow retreat in the San Francisco area. Corporate & media partners (Discus Dental, GC America, Philips Sonicare, RDH Magazine & Dentalcompare) profoundly impacted the profession through the support of these new speakers, writers and those entering in the corporate arena.
Whew! With all of that activity...I am looking forward to heading 'back to school'! We invite you to stop by our booth at the upcoming ADA Convention in San Francisco being held at the end of this month and we thank you for your support and enthusiasm for Dentalcompare!

Welcome to my new blog on dentalcompare! As the recently named Editor of Dental Hygiene for Dentalcompare, I am thrilled to be experiencing new 'adventures' in electronic media! I hope you have had a chance to view the July Hygiene/Perio features and found them of use in your clinical protocols.
As I write this, my mind is in a million places...because I am packing up to leave for the largest meeting of dental hygiene professionals in the country: RDH Under One Roof (UOR). The event grows larger each year and I have fond memories of the very first one held in Denver. As an attendee and presenter at each at every UOR I can attest to the fact this event has something for everyone.
From the best in continuing education to an exhibit hall featuring the latest in technology and products to social & networking opportunities, UOR represents a gathering place for dental hygienists to enhance their careers and success while builing life-long relationships.
I am looking forward to facilitating 2 sold-out yoga practices and break out sessions...but most of all, I am looking forward to seeing my colleagues, making new friends and gaining inspiration. And of course...let's not forget the laughter! If you've never attended a UOR, make a point to next year. The 2008 UOR will be held in Chicago, July 31 - August 2.
I am looking forward to keeping you up to date on the latest and greatest! As always, please do not hesitate to contact me at kmbernie@dentalcompare.com and enjoy our site where your comments, blogs and thoughts become our favorite feature!
